Pets in Slovakia — what every expat owner needs to know.

Registration rules, import requirements, and your legal rights as a pet owner.

🐾
Dog registration is mandatory in Slovakia
Zákon č. 282/2002 Z.z. requires all dog owners in Slovakia to register their dog with the local municipality within 30 days of acquisition or bringing the dog to Slovakia. You'll receive a evidenčná známka (registration tag). Annual fees vary by district (typically €5–€30). Failure to register can result in a fine of up to €165. Bratislava registration: bratislava.sk.
✈️
Bringing your pet to Slovakia — EU Pet Passport
EU regulation EC 576/2013 governs pet movement. Dogs, cats and ferrets must have a valid EU Pet Passport with rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel), microchip (ISO 11784/11785), and Echinococcus tapeworm treatment (dogs only) administered by a vet 1–5 days before entry. If arriving from outside the EU, additional documentation and a border inspection point (BIP) are required. Contact the State Veterinary and Food Administration (SVPS).
⚖️
Dangerous dogs — the law in Slovakia
Zákon č. 282/2002 Z.z. takes a behaviour-based approach — there is no banned breed list in Slovak law. However, municipalities may restrict certain breeds in public spaces. Owners of dogs that have caused injury may face administrative fines and compulsory behaviour assessment. A dog that has bitten must be reported to the local veterinary authority (regionálna veterinárna správa).

Common questions about pets in Slovakia.

Answers to the questions expat pet owners ask most often.

Yes. Zákon č. 282/2002 Z.z. requires registration within 30 days of acquiring or moving a dog to Slovakia. You register at your local municipal office (mestský úrad) and receive an identification tag. Bratislava residents can register at their district office. Unregistered dogs can result in fines up to €165.
Yes, but with more paperwork. Your pet needs an ISO-standard microchip, valid rabies vaccination, an official health certificate, and — for dogs — Echinococcus treatment 1–5 days before arrival. You must enter through a designated Border Inspection Point (BIP). Contact the SVPS (svps.sk) well in advance — processing can take weeks.
Slovak national law (zákon č. 282/2002 Z.z.) does not ban specific breeds — it focuses on individual behaviour. However, some Bratislava districts require muzzles and short leashes for large or traditionally guard-type breeds in public. Check your local district office for current rules, as they can vary between Staré Mesto, Ružinov, Petržalka and others.
Several Bratislava clinics offer 24/7 emergency veterinary services. The Veterinárna klinika Ružinov on Záhradnícka street and City Animal Hospital are frequently recommended by the expat community. Save their numbers in your phone — ask your vet at first visit for the closest 24h option near your home district.
