Education in Slovakia — what expat parents need to know.

Compulsory schooling, international school status, and home education options.

📚
Compulsory education in Slovakia
Zákon č. 245/2008 Z.z. (School Act) makes education compulsory for all children aged 6–16 residing in Slovakia, including expat children. Compulsory schooling begins in September of the year the child turns 6. Children of EU/EEA residents have the right to enrol in Slovak public schools free of charge. Non-EU residents on valid residence permits have the same right. Enrolment is at your local základná škola (primary school).
🌍
International schools — legal status in Slovakia
International schools in Bratislava operate under Slovak law as private schools (súkromné školy). They must be authorised by the Ministry of Education (minedu.sk). Schools offering the IB Diploma Programme are also accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. BISB (Pekníkova 6) and QSI (Šamorín) are the longest-established expat-facing options. Annual fees range from €8 000 to €22 000+ depending on school and year group.
🏠
Home education (domáce vzdelávanie)
Home education is legal in Slovakia under zákon č. 245/2008 Z.z., §24–§25. To home-educate, parents must apply to the headmaster of a "guarantor school" (kmeňová škola) which will oversee and evaluate the child's progress. The child sits exams at the guarantor school each year. Applications are submitted in May for the following September. This option is increasingly used by multilingual expat families.

Your questions about schools in Slovakia.

Practical answers from parents who've navigated the Slovak education system.

Yes. Zákon č. 245/2008 Z.z. makes education compulsory from age 6 to 16 for all children residing in Slovakia, regardless of nationality. You can fulfil this obligation through a Slovak public school, a private/international school, or home education (with a guarantor school). You are legally required to ensure your child is enrolled.
In general, no — standard school fees (školné) are not tax-deductible for employees under Slovak zákon č. 595/2003 Z.z. However, if your employer pays school fees as a non-financial benefit, this may be partially exempt from tax up to a limit. Consult an English-speaking accountant (see our Banks & Finance section) for your specific situation.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognised programme taught in English, aiming for university admissions worldwide. The Slovak state curriculum (zákon č. 245/2008) is taught in Slovak and leads to the maturita school-leaving certificate, required for Slovak university admissions. BISB and QSI offer IB; the American School offers both AP and IB. Slovak public schools follow the state curriculum but some offer bilingual streams.
You'll need: your child's birth certificate (with apostille and Slovak translation if non-Slovak), proof of residency (potvrdenie o pobyte), your residence permit or EU registration card, vaccination records. The school district is determined by your registered address. Contact your local district municipal office (miestny úrad) to confirm which school is assigned to your address.
