Pets in Slovakia, what every expat owner needs to know.

Registration rules, import requirements, and your legal rights as a pet owner.

🐾
Dog registration is mandatory in Slovakia
Zákon č. 282/2002 Z.z. requires all dog owners in Slovakia to register their dog with the local municipality within 30 days of acquisition or bringing the dog to Slovakia. You'll receive a evidenčná známka (registration tag). Annual fees vary by district (typically €5–€30). Failure to register can result in a fine of up to €165. Bratislava registration: bratislava.sk.
✈️
Bringing your pet to Slovakia, EU Pet Passport
EU regulation EC 576/2013 governs pet movement. Dogs, cats and ferrets must have a valid EU Pet Passport with rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel), microchip (ISO 11784/11785), and Echinococcus tapeworm treatment (dogs only) administered by a vet 1–5 days before entry. If arriving from outside the EU, additional documentation and a border inspection point (BIP) are required. Contact the State Veterinary and Food Administration (SVPS).
⚖️
Dangerous dogs, the law in Slovakia
Zákon č. 282/2002 Z.z. takes a behaviour-based approach, there is no banned breed list in Slovak law. However, municipalities may restrict certain breeds in public spaces. Owners of dogs that have caused injury may face administrative fines and compulsory behaviour assessment. A dog that has bitten must be reported to the local veterinary authority (regionálna veterinárna správa).

Things expats ask us all the time.

Can't find your specific service? Here's how the community usually handles it.

Absolutely, that's exactly what this section is for. If a business is English-friendly and useful for expats in Bratislava, it belongs on ExpatBase. Use the "Submit a Business" button and we'll review and add it within a few days.
All listings on ExpatBase are either submitted by the business itself (and verified by our team) or recommended directly by the expat community. Look for the community rating and number of reviews, those are the most reliable signal. When in doubt, check the reviews tab for real experiences from other expats.
Yes, more than you'd expect. Ružinov, Petržalka, and Dúbravka all have expat-friendly businesses, especially in healthcare, education, and tradespeople. Filter by district to see what's near you. If something is missing in your neighbourhood, submit it, the directory grows through community contributions.
Use the "Submit a Business" button at the top of the page. Basic listings are free. We review every submission to make sure the business is genuinely useful for the expat community before publishing. Turnaround is usually 2–3 working days.
